Amnesty International representative attempts to meet with heads of law-enforcement ministries

Official representative of the human rights organization Amnesty International Heather McGill will visit Belarus. During the visit she plans to carry out a number of meetings with staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Court, and other bodies.

McGill says, the officials are not eager to meet with her. The Supreme Court, for instance, could not find time for a meeting. Only the representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported, they were considering the possibility of a meeting.

First of all, the international human rights defender is interested in the issue of using death penalty in the judicial practice of the Republic of Belarus and the prospects of its final abrogation. Let us remind you, the Republic of Belarus remains the only European state that did not refuse from using death penalty.

Heather McGill also plans to visit several cities and meet with local human rights defenders.
