Authorities oppose UN’s consideration of communication by Zhuk’s mother

According to human rights activist Raman Kisliak, the Belarusian government appeals against the admissibility of communication filed by mother of death convict Andrei Zhuk, claiming that the facts mentioned are false, namely he allegedly failed to exhaust all domestic remedies.

‘Still, the remedies they are referring to – the appeal and petition for pardon – are extraordinary and not subject to compulsory implementation for submitting a communication to the Un Human Rights Committee. It is especially odd that in its comments Belarus denounces its obligations under the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which is absolutely intolerable,’ says Mr. Kisliak.

The lawyer is to submit his comments on the information by 7 January 2010.
