Homel human rights defenders help prepare complaint to UN Human Rights Committee for death convict

Human rights defender Leanid Sudalenka met the mother of a Homel resident, Aliaksandr Hrunou, who was sentenced to death for the murder of a 25-year-old student. The lawyer discussed the question of exhaustion of all domestic remedies for an individual complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee. The meeting was held within the framework of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty.”

“We do not assess the criminal offense, whatever it may be in its cruelty. We oppose the death penalty and call for the accession of our country to European values. During the meeting with Aliaksandr Hrunou’s mother we agreed to file a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee,” said Sudalenka.

Belarus is the only country in Europe to hand down and carry out executions. After the abolition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan in 2008, our country is the last among the states of the former Soviet Union, which applies this kind of punishment.
