Join Cities for Life campaign (video)

The campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus” calls on everyone to join the action “Cities for Life – Cities against the Death Penalty”, which takes place on November 30 to celebrate the first abolition of the death penalty by a European state, decreed by Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor of Habsburg-Lorraine in 1786 for his Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

During 2015, Belarus has already handed down two death sentences. The death penalty violates the right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a cruel, irreversible, inhuman and degrading punishment.

Join the campaign “Cities for Life – Cities against the Death Penalty” by posting on social networks or online a video called Pencil and Eraser with the hashtags #citiesforlife and #ЗаЖыццё

The campaign was initiated by the Catholic the Community of Sant'Egidio and has been celebrated annually since 2002. Date of November 30 was chosen because on that day in 1786 in the Italian Duchy of Tuscany is the first time in the history of the European states had abolished the death penalty.
