Week Against the Death Penalty: October 5-10

From 5 to 10 October, the annual Week Against the Death Penalty will be held in Belarus. This year’s evets will focus on the conditions of detention on death row.

October 5

Viciebsk. Festival “Rock for Life”. Musicians in support of a moratorium on the death penalty (Re1ikt, RSP, Teleport and Nizkiz). Cherdachok Beatles Club, 12 vulica Kastryčnickaja. 8 pm.

October 6

Višnieva, Valožyn district. Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass dedicated to Saint Ambrose (340-397), who encouraged members of the clergy not to pronounce or carry out capital punishment. 12 pm.

October 7

Minsk. Festival “Rock for Life”. Musicians in support of a moratorium on the death penalty (Nizkiz, Petlya Pristrastiya, Mutnaevoka, SnopSnoŭ and Teleport). RE:PUBLIC Club. 62 Prytyckaha. 5:30 pm.

October 8

Minsk. Screening of films on the death penalty and a discussion with the participation of activists of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus” and Viasna’s volunteer service.

October 9

Homieĺ, Sluck. Screening of films on the death penalty and a discussion with the participation of human rights defenders and activists of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus” Andrei Paluda and Palina Stsepanenka.

October 10

Minsk. Presentation of the exhibition “Everyone Has the Right to Know Their Rights” involving known artist and performer Tatsiana Tur. Performance on the problem of the death penalty. Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Minsk.

Strasbourg. Speech on the death penalty by the human rights activist Valiantsin Stefanovich in the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights. 2 pm local time.

16th World Day Against the Death Penalty: Living Conditions on Death Row. On October 10, the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty will draw public attention to the conditions of detention on death row, offering 10 things everyone can do to end the death penalty.

The first annual Week Against the Death Penalty was held by the Human Rights Center "Viasna" in 2013 as part of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus,” which was launched in 2009 with the aim of ending this inhumane form of punishment and help Belarus share European values. Unfortunately, Belarus is still the only country in Europe and the former Soviet Union which pronounces death verdicts and executes people.
