Representatives of ‘Amnesty International’ paid a visit to Hrodna

The representatives of the international human rights organization Amnesty International Heather McGill and Aisha Jung paid a visit to Hrodna within the guidelines of the campaign against the punishment of criminals with death.

Heather McGill believes that by this action they will be able to make the authorities understand the necessity to abolish the death penalty in the only country of Europe where it is still used.

’We came to launch here our campaign against the death penalty in Belarus. It is very important that different social groups should start talking about the death penalty, because it is the only way to develop the public opinion against the death penalty,’ said Mrs. McGill.

Within the framework of their visit the representatives of the human rights organization met with the parents of death convicts, representatives of various NGOs and the Orthodox Church.

The postcards that were prepared for Aliaksandr Lukashenka on behalf of the organization will be soon sent to him by members of Amnesty International.
