MPs to consider abolition of death penalty on 23 September

‘On 23 September, the working group on the death penalty of the National Assembly will take part in a round table discussion on the issue arranged by the Council of Europe,’ Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports, quoting the press-service of the House of Representatives.

‘A discussion on possible measures towards a moratorium or abolition of the death penalty is expected to take place,’ says the Parliament’s spokesman.

‘The meeting is a real opportunity for the CE key experts to give the Belarusian authorities practical advice on eliminating the barriers to the abolition of the death penalty in the country, it is also a chance to promote the idea in the society and to encourage experts to back the punishment,’ says a CE spokesperson.
