Barysau authorities ban picket against death penalty

On 20 September the Barysau addressed the Barysau Town Executive Committee with the request to authorize a picket against the death penalty.

They intended to hold the picket near the Barysau trading center Vesta on 10 October, the World Day against the Death Penalty. According to the law, the applicants were to have received an answer five days before the action, i.e. on 5 October.

Haven’t received an answer from the authorities in the due term, the human rights defender Aleh Matskevich went to the Barysau TEC to find whether the action was permitted or not. The head of the ideological department of the executive committee Liudmila Harnak told him that the action was banned because they hadn’t concluded service agreements with the police, the ambulance and street cleaners. By the way, such agreements are concluded only for large actions – meetings and demonstrations, not pickets.

A similar action was banned by the Barysau authorities in 2009, and this year they continue this shameful tradition.
