Lawyer says that he will file final appeal against death sentence on Uladzislaw Kavalyow after meeting with him
Uladzislaw Kavalyow’s lawyer filed an appeal with the Supreme
Court on Thursday, asking it to revoke the death sentence imposed on the
young man in the subway bombing case last year.
In the
appeal, the lawyer, Stanislaw Abrazey, briefly outlined violations that
were committed during the investigation and hearing of the case, Mr.
Kavalyow’s mother, Lyubow, told BelaPAN.
The lawyer also said that a final appeal would be filed after he met with the client.
“It
will describe comprehensively and in detail all committed violations,
which we believe should prompt the court to immediately revoke the
judgment,” said the woman.
In the appeal lodged on Thursday, the
lawyer requested the court to overturn the conviction of Mr. Kavalyow
and send the case for a retrial, as well as order the suspension of the
execution of the young man until its decision.

Television reported on Wednesday night that Alyaksandr Lukashenka had
denied a presidential pardon to Mr. Kavalyow and his friend Dzmitry
Kanavalaw.
As a result of their trial held between September 15
and November 30, Messrs. Kanavalaw and Kavalyow, both aged 26, were
convicted of two 2005 bomb explosions in Vitsyebsk, a bomb attack during
an open-air Independence Day concert in Minsk in July 2008 and a subway
bombing that killed 15 people and injured more than 200 on April 11,
2011. The Supreme Court of Belarus found Mr. Kanavalaw guilty of
committing the explosions and Mr. Kavalyow was found guilty of being
accomplice to the crimes.
Mr. Kavalyow applied for a
presidential pardon in early December, while Mr. Kanavalaw decided
against doing so, according to authorities.
