Baranavichy human rights activists hold street action on World Day against the Death Penalty
On 10 October the Baranavichy human rights
defenders and civil activists marked the World Day against the Death Penalty.
As far as the Mahiliou City Executive Committee always refuses to authorize any
socio-political actions, the civil activists decided not to file any
applications for their picket.
Adversaries of the death penalty walked around the city in two groups, talking
to passers-by and handing out informational materials about the necessity to
abolish the death penalty, including the postcard “We are against the death
penalty” and the informational booklet “No to Death Penalty!” where it is
stated that Belarus remains the only country in Europe where such kind of
punishment is still used. People also received calendars of the “Human Rights
Defenders against the Death Penalty” campaign.
“The aim of today's action is the abolition of the death penalty and the
accession of Belarus to the common European values. We tried to convince people
that there is no place for the death penalty in a democratic society,” pointed
the human rights defender Siarhei Housha.
