Brochures with UN HRC decision in Uladzislau Kavaliou case distributed in Brest

Belarus has once again ignored a decision of the UN Human Rights Committee, as the authorities have not printed or distributed the international body’s opinion in the case of Uladzislau Kavaliou executed on charges of committing a terrorist act in the Minsk metro. As a result, the death convict’s mother, Liubou Kavaliova, printed the Committee’s decision at her own expense.

On March 14, Brest human rights defender Raman Kisliak and activist Dzmitry Rabtsevich distributed brochures with the Committee's decision in Brest streets near the Regional Court building. A police officer who was on duty near the court approached the activists to check what materials were being distributed, and asked to move away from the building.

Raman Kisliak and Dzmitry Rabtsevich distributed 16 brochures to passersby, who doubted the guilt of Kavaliou and Kanavalau.

According to Raman Kisliak, such material should be read primarily by professionals – judges and prosecutors – those in charge of the fates of people and taking life-determining decisions.

Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou were executed on March 16, 2012 on charges of involvement in a terrorist attack committed on April 1, 2011 at the Metro station "Kastrychnitskaya" in Minsk, in which 11 people were killed on the spot and four more died in hospitals. In total, more than 300 people were injured.
