UN Human Rights Committee registered Aliaksandr Hrunou's communication

April 8, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence to a 25-year-old resident of Homel Aliaksandr Hrunou. On this occasion, he appealed to the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations.

The interests of the convict are represented by an activist of the campaign "Human Rights Defenders against the death penalty in Belarus" Leanid Sudalenka. He received a letter from the HRC that the appeal on behalf of Aliaksandr Hrunou was registered April 8, 2014 under the number 2375/2014.

In the near future, the Committee will also inform the Foreign Ministry of Belarus that Mr. Hrunou's case will be considered at the international level. According to paragraph 92 of the Rules of Procedure of the Committee, the State should not executed the death penalty until the consideration of the appeal on the merits at the UN.

Bear in mind that in September 2012 Aliaksandr Hrunou committed the murder of a student Natallia Yemialyanchykava with an extreme cruelty. Hrodna Regional Court sentenced him to death. Despite the fact that the case was sent back for retrial, at which there were discovered some circumstances which allowed issuing a more lenient sentence, the Supreme Court upheld the verdict – death by shooting.

Before the issue of the verdict on the case, Aliaksandr Lukashenka met with Prosecutor General Aliaksandr Kaniuk and noted that Hrunou deserved no mercy. It is not known so far whether the convict will apply to Lukashenka for clemency.
