Awards were given to winners of contest of competition of creative works on death penalty

The names of the winners of the competition of creative works within the framework of the campaign HumanRights Defenders against Death Penalty in Belarus were called on 10 October, on the World Day against the Death Penalty.

There were four winners in different nominations. The play ‘Blitz – S or One Can Dance Here! (the chronicle of the latest events)’ by Andrei Karelin won as the best literary work, an essay by Viktoryia Starastsenka – as the best publicist work. The nomination ‘original view on the problem’ was shared by two participants of the competition: Siarhei Dziadziul and Mikhas Bulavatski. The former represented the value of human life in graphics, while the latter presented a theoretical proof that the existence of the death penalty in a country decreases the morality of its citizens.

The competition was initiated by the Human Rights Center Viasna, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, the Belarusian PEN-center and the Union of the Belarusian Writers.

The campaign Human Rights Defenders against Death Penalty was launched in Belarus in January 2009 with the aim to stop the use of the death penalty in the country and make Belarus respect the common European values.

At present Belarus is the only European country and also the only country on the post-Soviet territory where death verdicts are issued and executed.
