How many death sentences have been executed since 1990?
On 12 May, human rights defenders addressed the Prosecutor General and the Chairperson of the Supreme Court with inquiries concerning the number of the death sentences issued in 1990-2009.
This action was taken within the guidelines of the Human Rights Defenders against Death Penalty campaign. As stated by the Brest human rights defender Raman Kisliak, this information is necessary for human rights defenders to continue the campaign on informing the population about the use of the death penalty in Belarus.
’At present, there is no precise information about the number of executed for this period of time. There is no information about the number of convicts and the number of the executed death verdicts. The information that is voiced by the Belarusian officials is fragmentary and unofficial. That’s why we addressed the Interior Minister, the Prosecutor General and the Chairperson of the Supreme Court in order to receive the official statistics on this issue,’ commented Mr. Kisliak.
