On 10 October, the World Day against the Death
Penalty, civil activists and volunteers held informational actions in different
parts of Belarus.
In Minsk,
activists of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty”
came to Nezalezhnasts Avenue
to remind passers-by that the Belarusian state still kills people. People
eagerly took the informational booklets that were distributed by the human
rights defenders. There are many people who are concerned with this problem. Some
of them even started discussions with the activists.
Human rights defenders also handed out the booklets “Say No to the Death
Penalty!” in the center of Baranavichy, near shops and bus stops and in the
part in Kamsamolskaya Street.
People eagerly took informational materials and discussed the “killing of
criminals” with human rights defenders. As a result of this discussion it was
found that about a half of the questioned people had a negative attitude to
this kind of penalty and supported the introduction of the death penalty
moratorium.
A similar action was held by activists of youth organizations in Mahiliou. They
handed out the booklets in Pushkin
Avenue. According to one of them, more than 300
booklets were distributed.
The police didn’t interfere with the action in any towns or cities of Belarus.
