Belarusian believers against execution of Kanavalau and Kavaliou
About twenty believers, who hold daily
prayers near St. Symon and Alena Church in the center of Minsk, addressed Aliaksandr Lukashenka in
connection with the issue of the death verdict to Kanavalau and Kavaliou and
the related hunger-strike of Sviatlana Chornaya.
Here's the full text of the letter:
“We, believers of different confessions, participants of the daily prayers for
political prisoners (the initiative “We Mustn't Forget”) join the address of
Sviatlana Chornaya, who has kept a hunger-strike of protest against the death
penalty to Kanavalau and Kavaliou since 30 November 2011, and express our
support to her.
We address all parties, organizations and movement and all concerned people in
our country with the proposal to support the initiative of this brave,
self-sacrificing woman, to express solidarity and thus prevent the lynching of
Kavaliou and Kanavalau, and to make everything possible for the abolishment of
the death penalty in Belarus!
We address You, Mr. Lukashenka, and express our protest
against the death sentence to Kanavalau and Kavaliou, because we think that the
accusation failed to prove their guilt properly. We think with horror that if
each of us, and You, Mr. Lukashenka, don't do everything what depends on him,
the number of victims of the April terrorist act can increase by two more
people, and all of us would be guilty of this crime. If there is at least a
slight suspicion that blood of innocent people can be shed, it must be
prevented, otherwise this blood will fall as a deadly sin on all of us! We hope
that the cry from the heart of Sviatlana Chornaya, who is not afraid to
sacrifice herself for justice, will be heard by You, and You, as the man who
holds the power in our country, being a Christian, will introduce a Moratorium
on the death penalty in Belarus!”
