EU Ambassadors present a démarche to Foreign Ministry of Belarus to mark World Day Against the Death Penalty
On 2 October, to mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty (10 October), the Ambassador of Latvia to Belarus, together with the Ambassadors of France and Italy in Belarus and representatives from the European Union Delegation in Minsk presented a démarche to the Foreign Ministry of Belarus to repeatedly draw attention of Belarusian authorities to the issue of abolishing capital punishment in Belarus.
The démarche is a joint decision by the European Union Delegation in Minsk and the Ambassadors of the European Union Member States accredited in Belarus, and its delivery was also entrusted to the head of the Latvian diplomatic mission.
Belarus is the only country in the European continent in which capital punishment is still applied. The European Union, including Latvia, have on a number of occasions urged Belarusian authorities to set moratorium on death penalty.
