“NO” to death penalty” campaign supported in Simferopol
Simferopol
schoolchildren supported the campaign against the use of the death penalty in Belarus. Within
the framework of the mobile exhibition “Everyone has the right to know their
rights” held in Simferopol
at the end of October they signed postcards addressed to Aliaksand Lukashenka
with the demand to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty with the
subsequent abolition of this kind of punishment.
About 400 people were executed in Belarus
since the dissolution of the USSR.
The latest executions, of Uladzislau Kavaliou and Dzmitry Kanavalau, witnessed
that there are serious problems. The absence of an independent judiciary,
impartial investigation and fair trial give all reasons to believe that this
penalty can be used to innocent people, and any person can become a victim of
the state.
The schoolchildren were also shown the film “Departed on Sentence”, the second
film dedicated to this topic by script writer Palina Stsepanenka and producer
Viktar Tratsiakou.
