The woman asks to pardon her son, as well as to arrange a meeting with the death convict.

On September 17, the Supreme Court upheld the death verdict handed down to Pavel Sialiun by the Hrodna Regional Court. The trial court found him guilty committing four criminal offences, including double murder, theft and desecration of corpses and sentenced him to death.

Pavel Sialiun then filed a supervisory appeal to the Supreme Court. He also, through his representative Andrei Paluda, submitted a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee.

Ahead of the consideration of the cassation appeal, the convict’s mother wrote to the Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus Filaret requesting to influence Aliaksandr Lukashenka, so that her son could be pardoned and the death verdict against him abolished. The Belarusian Orthodox Church has repeatedly opposed the death penalty in Belarus.

Tamara Sialiun is now writing to President asking him to pardon her son, “My son is still alive. I would like to ask you, Aliaksandr Ryhoravich, for now only you can decide the fate of my son. What he did cannot be undone, the shooting of my son cannot resurrect the victims.” Pavel Sialiun’s mother asks to pardon of her son and, if possible, meet with him in person. “Please, take your time to decide. Now the fate of my son is only in your hands,” says the death convict’s mother.
