October 10, Mahiliou human rights defenders held an event to mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty.
Aliaksei Kolchyn briefly described the situation with the use of the death penalty in the world and in Belarus, presented the results of sociological research on the attitude of the Belarusian society to the death penalty. After that, about two dozens of participants of the meetingheld a lively discussion around the issue of the death penalty. At the end of the meeting, they were shown the human rights film from the series "Six Arguments against the Death Penalty". Human rights activists called on those present to sign the petition against the death penalty on the website of the campaign "Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty in Belarus.".
After the event, its participants were given materials of the campaign "Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty in Belarus" and production with its symbols.
The event was organized by the Mahiliou branch of the Human Rights Centre "Viasna" and was held at the office of the community center "Kola".
