Torture of death convict’s relatives: Fifth argument against the death penalty (video)

The United Nations Human Rights Committee has repeatedly said that the procedure of executing death verdicts in Belarus has signs of torture and inhuman treatment, both in relation to the executed person and his relatives. They are not notified of the date of execution, and staying on death row takes several months and it is a tough experience for a person’s mind. The convict cannot really realize when the verdict will be carried out, when the last day of his life will come, he cannot prepare for this hard act.

Human rights activist Hary Pahaniayla says: “Belarus continues to operate a law dating back to the Soviet period, even when during the use of the capital punishment the body of the executed prisoner is not passed over to his relatives and the burial place is not disclosed. And in doing so they try to make a secret out of the very date of execution and the place where a person is buried.”
