Exhibition of posters against death penalty held in Almaty
A topical exhibition of the Belarusian artist Aleh Ablazhei started in the capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty, on the World Day against the Death Penalty.
In such a way the organizers, Freedom House Kazakhstan, expressed their solidarity with the Belarusian community and joined the Week against the Death Penalty in Belarus.
A viewing of the movie “The Life of David Gale” was held within the framework of the “Cinema School on Human Rights”. The film tells the viewers about the life of an activist of the movement for the abolition of the death penalty, David Gale, who happened to be sentenced to death himself.
After the film, there was held a discussion during which its participants talked about various legal and philosophical sides of the issue and expressed their views on the admissibility of the use of the death penalty.
Let us remind an indefinite moratorium on the death penalty was declared in Kazakhstan back in December 2003. However, the question of returning the death penalty has been repeatedly raised n the society. At present, the only country who continues to practice the death penalty is Belarus. According to the information of human rights defenders, more than 400 people have been punished with death in the country over the last twenty years.
