Meanwhile in Belarus… To put an end to death penalty in Europe

(Paris) In 2017, Belarus is still the only country in Europe to apply death penalty. Aiming to denounce and bring this grim reality to public attention, FIDH publishes in social networks a video "Meanwhile in Belarus".

Aimed at a wide audience, "Meanwhile in Belarus" was developed and produced by the communication agency Babel that used the well known concept of videos "Meanwhile in...". In social networks, plenty of videos under the latter title display absurd behaviors. "Meanwhile in Belarus" twists the idea to illustrate that death penalty today is the most absurd behabior in Belarus and a capital fail for Europe.

"Death penalty is institutionalised killing that does not restore justice. It helps cruelty take root in a society and has no effect on the level of crime," deplored Dimitris Christopoulos, FIDH President.

The goal of "Meanwhile in Belarus"  is to urge the Internet users to act in favour of the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus. The video thus leads to a website "Belarus: last country in Europe to apply the death penalty" and the petition launched by FIDH member organisation in Belarus, Human Rights Centre "Viasna".

The launch of the video is part of the wider FIDH advocacy campaign that started last October 2016 with the publication of the report "Death Penalty in Belarus : Murder on (Un)Lawful Grounds". In 2017, FIDH will continue mobilising the international community with an aim to put an end to the death penalty in Belarus.
