On July 13, the UN Human Rights Committee confirmed the registration of an individual communication submitted on behalf of Ihar Hershankou, who was sentenced to death by the Mahilioŭ Regional Court on July 21, 2017.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court stayed the execution of the death sentences against Ihar Hershankou and Siamion Berazhnoy while their appeals were under supervisory consideration. However, the appeals have already been examined, as reported by the convicts’ lawyers. This effectively means that the period of suspension of the death sentences is over and the prisoners can be executed at any time.

Nonetheless, the human rights activists hope that the Republic of Belarus will take interim measures to suspend the execution of the two death sentences while Hershankou’s complaint is being considered by the UN Human Rights Committee.
